An Arizona Criminal Defense Attorney

Should I Agree to Be Interviewed?

Do Not Help Investigators Build Their Case Against You

In many investigations of child sex offenses and other crimes involving children, law enforcement officials and Child Protective Services (CPS) workers will attempt to interview a suspect at home before any charges are filed or arrests are made. Many people agree to these interviews, thinking since they have done nothing wrong, they have nothing to hide, and should be as forthcoming as possible to get their name cleared.

Unfortunately, these good intentions are often taken advantage of by those prosecuting the case and will be used to build a case against the individual.

At the Law Office of Richard L. Lougee, we advise anyone who believes he or she is a suspect in a criminal investigation or has been contacted by CPS or law enforcement officials to talk with an experienced criminal defense attorney before consenting to an interview. It is important to protect your rights by not giving information to those who are attempting to convict you of a serious offense.

Never Agree to an Interview before Consulting with a Lawyer

It is never a good idea to agree to be questioned if you are a suspect in a case involving child abuse or child sexual abuse. Those who are there to interview you, including police officers or CPS workers, already presume you are guilty, and the purpose of the questioning is not to investigate the facts, but, rather, to corroborate your presumed guilt.

Furthermore, there is rarely such a thing as a "good statement" in cases where the child is an alleged victim. Interviewers in these cases are trained to develop information about the character of the suspect. They will often ask you invasive questions about the nature of the relationships you have with your wife and your children. Finally, they will confront you with the accusations and then ask you if your child is a liar. You are being set up by such an interview.

Never agree to be questioned before consulting an experienced criminal defense lawyer.
